a new philosophy

So, I've wondered onto a new philosophy that I feel the need to share with all of you who happen to read this. It's a very simple principle, Stop and take the picture, or draw the picture, or otherwise take the time to capture that idea in your head. As David Lynch says, "Ideas are the best things going." Don't let them pass by unnoticed. I'm very guilty of that, but Take a moment, Take a picture, everyone has camera phones these days, just capture something you see. So, here's my pictures from today.

Birds are the theme of the day.

Like a bird on a wire, like a drunk in a midnight choir, I have tried in my way to be free.

There's something amazingly simple about power lines in the morning.

So, just meaning to take a picture of my daughter I got this lovely look at Walmart.

Finally, I wouldn't be much of a Production Designer if I didn't give you a hint of what I'm working on. Hint Hint, it involves paint and knives (not diapers).

This book will change your life

It's unlikely that you walk through your local independent book store (Page One http://page1book.com for instance in Albuquerque) and find a book, outside of the religious or inspirational section, that will change your life. Unlikely, but it could happen. A time ago I was picking up a copy of Juxtapoz, I should seriously just subscribe, when I stopped by the Graphic Design section of the store, as I often do, to look at what books I haven't seen before are there. On this occasion I spotted a small book with Japanese on the spine. Now I have spent 10 days in Okinawa, Japan visiting Phil and Jenn while they lived there, but I can't read a lick of Japanese. So I just had to pull this book out, what was it you ask? It was a book of American Ads from the 60's. Change my life? For a moment at least it has. It's strange to talk about inspiration. Mitch Hedberg had a good joke about it:

I like when they say a movie is inspired by a true story. That's kind of silly. "Hey, Mitch, did you hear that story about that lady who drove her car into the lake with her kids and they all drowned?" "Yeah, I did, and you know what - that inspires me to write a movie about a gorilla!"

In this case I have been inspired by these ads. They're amazing. I can't imagine that the world once functioned in this way. Where strange skinny women in a striped black and white mod dress and a space helmet hocks Vodka. As the introduction to the book points out there is no political strife visible in these ads. All races seem to be getting along with no need for a civil rights movement. Everything is peaceful modern and cool. How times do change.

Anyway I also picked up some high gloss spray paint. You'll see why in Episode 5.

a new begining

HI Everyone that happens to read this. My name is Brian Austin Wenrich and I am the Production designer for the webseries The Scare Game (http://thescaregame.com or http://www.youtube.com/user/TheScareGame). I’ve been thinking a lot about what I do online and I thought, hey why don’t I blog about being a production designer on a webseries. So that’s what this will be, I hope you enjoy it.

This is what my kitchen table right now. I can't go into details of what I'm working on, but maybe this gives you an idea of what it looks like when I work on a project for the show. Sometimes I have to try several ways to do something, because I'm learning everything as I go. Maybe if I can keep this blog up we can learn together or you can make suggestions to me if you know how to do something I don't. Most of the time I have to make things from scratch in order to avoid copyright issues or just to make things we don't have.

I regularly pick up the art magazines Juxtapose and Hi Fructose, which you see in the picture. I also grabbed Gorezone because I've heard good things about it lately.

I think that's all I'm blogging about right now, but I will tell you I'm watching the show Torchwood while working today and I enjoy it quite a bit.

Best All,
